Oxygen and Air Pressure
Here at Science Sparks we love a good Science book! One of the funkiest I’ve come across has to be Cool Science Tricks. It comes with some alka seltzer and a little old style camera film type case which makes it even more exciting to receive as a gift.
Z, who is 5 has been looking through the book with wonder for the last few weeks. A few of the experiments he recognises as we’ve done them before, but plenty are new as well. I’m going to feature some over the next few weeks so make sure you pop back to check them out.
My husband and son did this experiment last week when I was out with the girls. Z was so excited he wrote about it in his news at school the next day.
What you need:
- a box of matches
- eight small coins
- a plate
- a glass
- Pour some water onto a plate and place the coins in a pile in the middle.
- Light two or three matches at the same time and lay them down on the coins burning. (be careful)
- Place the glass over the matches, as they burn water will be sucked up inside the glass.
- We used coloured water to make it a bit easier to see the water rise.
The heat of the flame increases the air pressure in the glass which forces some air out. The flame goes out once all the oxygen is used up and the air cools and contracts. The air pressure outside the glass is now higher than inside and so water is sucked into the class until the air pressure is equalized.
