Shadow puppets are a super easy science activity with endless creative opportunities. My 3 year old loves his Gruffalo’s Child Shadow puppet and my older children like to draw around toys outside on a sunny day. Setting up a homemade sundial is another fun shadow activity and a great extended investigation. Colourful Shadow Puppets You’ll…
Imagine pulling a delicious cake out of an oven. The smell slowly spreads around the room and then through the house. This is diffusion! The lovely cake smelling particles move from where there are lots of them ( high concentration ) to where there are less of them ( low concentration ). Diffusion can be…
Our next Easter STEM challenge is to build a harness to safely transport a small egg down a zip wire. Once you’ve built a suitable harness for a chocolate egg, you could try a real egg ( maybe boil it first ) and test to see if the harness works for that as well. We’ve…
A pneumatic system uses pressurised air to transmit energy. For this chick and egg craft I used two syringes. The system starts with the syringe inside the box in the closed position ( syringe fully down ) and with the syringe outside the box in the open position ( syringe fully open ). When the…
This simple felt tip pen paper chromatography experiment is a great way to learn about this particular method of separating mixtures. Felt tip pen chromatography is a fantastic science activity for kids as it usually works well and quickly, so children can admire their colourful creation after just a few minutes! WHAT IS CHROMATOGRAPHY? Chromatography is…
This collection of science experiments for learning about the human body is perfect for encouraging kids to learn about their bodies! I’ve split the ideas into three age groups: preschool, primary age ( 5-11 ) and secondary ( 12+) but these are very loose recommendations. Hopefully you’ll find something that sounds fun to try! I’ve…
How many times have you dropped a piece of toast and found it landed butter side down, leaving a smear of butter on the floor? Is it just bad luck or is there a reason the toast lands that way? Why does toast land butter side down? One theory as to why toast lands butter…
The kitchen is a great place to explore science with children. Even something as simple as melting chocolate is a great science experiment. You can cook, bake, set up a sensory activity, create science magic, make lava lamps and volcanoes, or even play with ice. The creative opportunities with this collection of kitchen science experiments are…
As a mother of two daughters ( and two sons ) and someone who has always loved science, I am passionate about educating all my children about how women have been responsible for many of the world’s most groundbreaking scientific discoveries. Books are a wonderful way to learn about inspirational women, so I’ve pulled together…
We’ve dissected flowers many times before, but this was our first attempt at a 3D flower model. A model is a great hands-on way to learn about the structure and function of plant organs and the importance of pollination. I’ve also made some FREE flower structure revision cards you might like. 3D Flowering Plant Model…
