This waterproof roof STEM challenge is a simple but fun activity that even very young children will enjoy. My 3,5 and 7-year-old loved it, especially when it came to making it ‘rain’. LEGO waterproofing experiment Before starting, we spent a few minutes talking about what we expected to happen and how we could make the…
My 7 year old loves patterns and symmetry. When he builds a LEGO or DUPLO house they always follow either a pattern or are symmetrical. I think symmetry appeals to his mathematical brain. Today we’re sharing lots of fun ways to learn about symmetry, which might sound boring but is actually fascinating. Did you know…
We scoot to school every day. Our journey takes us along a lovely tree-lined tarmac path, uphill on the way to school and downhill on the way back. Over the last few months, the kids have made lots of observations about the ease ( or difficulty ) of scooting without realising the science behind it….
We’ve talked about properties of materials before when we investigated how waterproof materials are or how strong they are, we’ve even organised different objects by the material they’re made from by looking at the properties of those materials. Today we’re going to explore how some materials are better at absorbing sound than others. Sound Investigation…
This post is all about adding a bit of science sparkle to role-play. The activities should hopefully add a stimulating and educational twist to an already fun game. My little boy is usually a bit reluctant to join in with role-play games, but if I add in a task or some props, he is much…

My children love pottering around the garden and watching plants grow, especially those that grow food! Spring seems to have arrived, so we’ve been making the most of the sunny weather and taking the opportunity to learn some plant science. We cleared out an area of the garden for the children to do some planting….
My 6-year-old came out of school last week incredibly happy and excited as he had spent the afternoon building a candy house. As soon as we got home, he wrote me a shopping list of what we needed to do a similar activity at home. This would also be great for a Three Little Pigs…
My little girls love to play doctor role-play games, leading to many fun learning experiences over the years. These are our favourite ideas for learning while playing doctors. Easy ideas for doctor role-play games Keep notes I bought a cheap little notebook for the girls to write their doctor’s notes in. Learn about the body…
I’m very happy to welcome back Maggy from Red Ted Art today with a guest post about the Science of Music. I love Maggy’s blog because she makes everything so pretty, whereas I only manage functional items. Maggy has made “shooters” and explained roundabouts in previous posts, but today, it’s all about making music! You could…
