Welcome to more Spectacular Summer Science. Today we’ve got a super fun baking soda experiment to share. The girls wanted to have a tea party, so we used a bit of Science Sparks magic to make it more exciting. What you need: Instructions Do be careful with the vinegar. It will hurt if it gets in…
What we were hoping to show with this cool splatter pattern investigation was that a water balloon dropped from a greater height falls with more speed and has a bigger splatter pattern than a water balloon of the same size dropped from a lower height. As with many science investigations, we hit a few issues…
Welcome to day 5 of our Spectacular Summer Science series, so far this week, we’ve made baking soda ice cubes, done some slipping and sliding, investigated our heart rate and been on a bug hunt with Twinkl. When I first created Science Sparks, we made some pretty flowers to demonstrate transpiration. This activity worked for…
Welcome to Day 4 of our Spectacular Summer Science series. Today, we’ve been on a minibeast hunt. The girls are fascinated by all bugs and insects and are not the least bit squeamish. We downloaded some fun observation forms from Twinkl to make it more exciting and to encourage writing. S was thrilled to be…
The heart is a muscle that functions as a very powerful pump to transport blood around the body. It beats between 60 and 100 times a minute but can beat even faster than that if needed. The blood transports nutrients and oxygen to cells in the body, and waste products are removed. The right side…
On a rainy day, my children can often be found skidding down our hallway. We have wooden floors, so they are slippy enough to be fun, but not so slippy it’s dangerous. We have found that skidding is a lot more fun when wearing socks, but why is this? The answer is Friction. Friction is…
Today is the first day of the summer holidays for us, and I have a big plan to post a science activity every day for the whole six weeks. We’re kicking off with a favourite reaction, baking soda and vinegar. The reaction between baking soda and vinegar is a great first chemical reaction for children…
As you know, we love fun and easy science experiments at Science Sparks. I’m always on the lookout for new ideas and inspiration, so I was thrilled to receive this book by Loralee Leavitt. The book is beautifully laid out, and each page is exciting, with simple instructions and enticing images. Z and S couldn’t…
Full details coming soon, but the idea behind this activity is to create an ice castle. You could use a castle shaped cake mould to freeze the water and then paint the castle. Another way to do it would be to use lots of small ice cubes and create towers as they melt, refreezing between…
The last time we tried a filtering experiment using dirty water, we used kitchen roll ( kitchen towel ) as the filter. Today, we tried something a little different. We looked in the garden for three things that might make good filters and chose large stones, small stones and sand. We discussed which we thought would be the…
