Science Sparks is full of easy and fun science experiments for kids to do at home. Our fun science investigations include engineering, coding, biology, chemistry and physics experiments.
Learn more about the wonderful world of science by trying our exciting science experiments, cool facts, free printables, photos and videos. We’ve also got a great collection of STEM projects, STEM Challenges and science fair projects.
Our science experiments include removing the shell from an egg, launching bottle rockets, create edible life cycles, making lava lamps and lots more science experiments for kids of all ages.
Today’s inspirational female scientist is the wonderful Rosalind Franklin. Rosalind Franklin is probably best known for not getting the credit she deserved for her part in the discovery of the structure of DNA. Rosalind’s work on DNA was only one part of her impressive career. She also conducted pioneering work on the structure of viruses!…
Here at Science Sparks we love science experiments and STEM Challenges that use recycled materials. A Pringles can is a great versatile item that can be used for lots of different science activities and projects. We’ve made torches, art bots, drums and even motorised cars all using a Pringles can as the main part. Can…
This easy paper aeroplane launcher is a great STEM project for kids. We spent a long time perfecting the design of the launcher and then even longer finding the best size plane to use. Once you’ve got the launcher working you can experiment with different trajectories and shape and sizes of planes to see which…
All my children loved preschool and reception when it was pirate themed so I’ve pulled together all my pirate themed science activities and pirate sensory ideas into one place. Most of these were tested with my daughter’s YR class. They loved testing the little bags to see which kept pirate treasure the driest and making…
How did learning in lockdown go for you? My 13 year old did brilliantly as he had his usual school day but from home. My 11 and 9 year old did all the work they were set but with a 3 year at home as well I just didn’t have enough time to spend with…
The next scientist in my wonderful women in science series is the brilliant Marie Curie. Being a woman in the 1800s wasn’t easy, and Marie had to overcome many hurdles before even starting her career in science. Marie Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the first person to win one…
I remember the first time I saw a centrifuge in a lab and thinking how clever it was. Centrifuges can be used to separate mixtures, by spinning them at very high speeds. Liquids that are more dense settle at the bottom of a test tube after spinning. A washing machine spinning is also an example…
Marie Daly was an American biochemist and the first African-American woman to receive a Chemistry PhD in the United States. Marie’s groundbreaking work led to a new understanding of how diet affects the human circulatory system. Marie was fascinated by the human body. After her PhD, she worked on a seven-year research program on how…
Welcome to the first post in a new series about inspirational women scientists. Throughout history, women have made huge contributions to science, technology, engineering, and maths but have often been overlooked. I’m going to highlight just a few of these pioneering women and share some simple science ideas related to their work. The first scientist…
Baking soda experiments or activities are a great, safe and easy way to introduce the concept of a chemical reaction to children. Baking soda is alkaline and reacts with acids such as vinegar, releasing carbon dioxide ( a gas ) and water. The fizz produced is brilliant fun for children to watch, especially if you combine it…
