Science Sparks is full of easy and fun science experiments for kids to do at home. Our fun science investigations include engineering, coding, biology, chemistry and physics experiments.
Learn more about the wonderful world of science by trying our exciting science experiments, cool facts, free printables, photos and videos. We’ve also got a great collection of STEM projects, STEM Challenges and science fair projects.
Our science experiments include removing the shell from an egg, launching bottle rockets, create edible life cycles, making lava lamps and lots more science experiments for kids of all ages.
Every now and then we like to try a more ‘traditional’ science experiment and walking water is one I’ve been trying to catch on video for ages. This super simple experiment works quickly and is very impressive. The science behind it, can be a bit tricky for little ones, but you could start by spilling…
Did you see our post about Solar System activities last month? Learning Resources have some brilliant Solar System and space products and kindly sent us these to try out. GeoSafari® Motorised Solar System This is a really great way to help children visualise our Solar System. The set comes with the sun, earth and eight planets….
Continuing with our coding for kids series, I have a fun activity that’s not only lots of fun, but perfect for helping improve logic skills. We used masking tape to draw some obstacles on the floor and an end point, blindfolded one child and asked another to direct them to the end point. An example…
I try very hard with Science Sparks to only use equipment and materials generally found around the home, so people don’t have to buy lots of resources to carry out our activities, but there are a few items that make great resources for Early Years settings or for a science at home box. Magnets We used…
I’ve put a lot of thought into this post, knowing it might be quite controversial, but as a female who has always loved science, studied science and then worked in a very male dominated field I am passionate about inspiring a love of science and a curiosity about the world in all children. Every single activity…
I’ve got another fun pirate themed activity today, this time demonstrating density. Density is quite a hard concept to grasp but this is a really nice introduction and full of little wow moments. Just the fact that the oil sits on the water is quite fun. We used blue water to make it look like…
Building and testing boats is a fun preschool science activity for learning about the properties of materials and the effect of gradient on speed. We split the experiment into two parts. First, we tested different materials to see which worked best as a boat and then raced the boats down different inclines. This activity is also…
This is a really fun way to learn about magnetism. First, have a play to find out which objects stick to your magnets, what do you notice about them? Can you gather together a set of objects and predict which will stick to your magnet? Remember – not all metals are attracted to magnets, but…
Did you know play dough conducts electricity and can be used to make circuits? Using play dough is a fun and very low cost way to learn about circuits and electricity. Â In our circuit we use a component called a Light Emitting Diode (LED). Â These are very easy and inexpensive to purchase from online stores…
Welcome to the first in a series of fun PIRATE themed science investigations. First up is a bit of code cracking. Code cracking is brilliant for helping to develop logical thinking and you can make it as easy or as hard as you want depending on the age of a child. Last year my little boy…
