Like most children, if given a straw, my four will blow bubbles till the cup overflows, which gave me an idea for a fun investigation. We tried to find out which of three different drinks made the best bubbles, using it as a fun exercise in experimental design. Bubbly Drinks Challenge Find out whether purple…
One of the activities my children ask to do over and over again is our jumping frogs, which are a great way to learn about static electricity. Inspired by Inspiration Laboratories moving ghost, we made jumping ghosts instead of frogs. To make it more of an investigation rather than a demonstration, we tried to make…
Autumn is definitely with us, and supermarkets here have filled their shelves with lots of lovely squash varieties. We used them to make a fun ‘Guess what’s in the pumpkin’ game as a Halloween science activity. I hollowed each pumpkin out and decorated them with a pumpkin face using a crayon pen. I then filled…
Do you remember when we designed a house made of sweets and tried to find the best materials for its construction? We’ve followed the same concept with this fun edible science investigation to make a marshmallow Olaf from Disney’s Frozen. What are the best sweets for Olaf? Marshmallows were the obvious choice, and we decided three…
We were very excited to be invited for a sneaky peak at Professor Blasts’s Learning Lab at Paultons Park. I’ve been lucky enough to tag along on a few school trips with my own children and have seen the kind of places that work well and those that don’t and I’m certain that the combination…
The science experiments my children talk about for months afterwards are generally the messy ones, like our splatter patterns, glow in the dark oobleck, baking soda experiments and the well known coke and mento experiment. If you try this classic chemistry experiment definitely do it outside as it’s VERY messy and sticky. Sometimes you’ll see it called…
Right at the beginning of summer we designed and then constructed a cardboard kitchen. First we thought about the features we needed to include by looking at our own kitchen and considering what we thought were the most important features. An area for the hob Tall enough to stand at comfortably An area to rest…
I’ve often wished we had a big LEGO® vacuum cleaner that sucked up and sorted LEGO®. Our collection is mixed up in a large box under my 7 year old bed. So today, we set about making a LEGO® filter. This is our first attempt and needs a little refining. First, we looked around the…
Our house is still loom band crazy, and although bracelets are still a big favourite, we’ve tried to be a little more adventurous this Summer. These are our 10 favourite Loom Band activity ideas. How about practising measuring with loom bands? Can you investigate how to make super bouncy loom band bouncy balls? We love…
My girls have grown up in a house full of LEGO, Brio, K’nex thanks to an older brother and a LEGO loving Mother, so I’ve never been in a situation where they haven’t wanted to play with construction toys. They pretty much build with anything they can get their hands on. However, I know lots of their…
