Here at Science Sparks we love easy STEM challenges. Not only are they great fun but also a wonderful opportunity for children to work together creatively to solve a problem. Building and engineering projects are especially good for encouraging kids to think and re-evaluate if something doesn’t work. STEM Challenges tend to be simple to…
Water and oil do not mix. They are said to be immiscible. This is because water is a polar molecule – its structure means that is has a positive charge one end and a negative charge the other end. Water molecules stick together because the positive end of one water molecule is attracted to the…
Red cabbage indicator turns pink in the presence of acids, so by testing different types of acids ( lemon juice and vinegar are good to try ), you can make a range of lovely pink potions perfect for Valentine’s Day! If pink isn’t your thing, add an alkali ( baking soda works well ) and…
If you’ve ever made an erupting volcano model you most likely used the baking soda and vinegar reaction to make it erupt. Baking soda and vinegar react to neutralise each other ( vinegar is an acid and baking soda an alkali ) releasing carbon dioxide, which is the bubbles of gas you see. If you…
I’ve got lots of fun activities and facts about the Moon to share today. The Moon is probably more important to the Earth than you think. Did you know it stabilises the wobble of the Earth on its axis, giving us a fairly stable climate and causing tides? Moon Facts Did you know the Moon…
This heart model is a great demonstration of one chamber of the heart and valve. The heart has two features that keep blood flowing in the right direction. These are chambers and valves. Chambers fill with blood, then squeeze to pump the blood out. Each side of the heart has an entry chamber ( atrium…
What is an emulsion? Two or more liquids that don’t mix create an emulsion when one is added to the other. The properties of the new liquid are different to either of the liquids alone. Emulsions are a special type of colloid. Liquids that don’t mix together are called immiscible liquids. Examples of Immiscible Liquids…
These simple science experiments are perfect for a rainy day or when you need a quick and easy activity idea to keep the kids busy for an hour or so. They don’t need much prep or thought beforehand and are easy to set up and explain. Don’t forget I also have a couple of science…
We’re making the most of the cold weather by sticking with our ice theme this week. This ice painting science activity is super simple and great fun. I just wish I had a bigger freezer to make a larger sheet of ice. Materials for ice painting Tray ( I used the cheapest oven tray I…
We visited Winchester Science Centre two years ago to see their special Christmas event and it was fantastic, so we couldn’t wait to visit again especially as this year it’s dinosaur themed and two of my children are dino crazy at the moment. All the normal exhibits are still there. Our favourites are the running…
