Like most children, my three big ones love their fidget spinners, which led us to wonder what else we could do with them. First, we have this easy art activity. Materials Fidget spinner Paper or card Felt tip pens Scissors Instructions Draw around your fidget spinner and cut out a disc to fit on the…
Here at Science Sparks, we’re huge Harry Potter fans, so with that in mind, I have some fun Harry Potter science experiments coming up over the next few weeks. First up are our golden snitch catapults. How to make a golden snitch catapult You’ll need Wide lolly sticks/craft sticks Elastic bands Table tennis balls Feathers…
Earthquakes occur when parts of the Earth’s crust and upper mantle move suddenly. Large earthquakes can cause catastrophic amounts of damage so it’s very important to be able to predict when they might happen. Earthquakes are detected using a seismometer which detects vibrations in the earth. We’ve made a very simple model of a seismometer to demonstrate…
This hands-on chicken life cycle sensory bin is brilliant for working on fine motor skills, whilst introducing the concept of a life cycle. We used a chicken as the example as most children are familiar with eggs and chickens making it a little easier to understand. What you’ll need: How to make a chicken life…
Colour mixing is a great activity for learning about primary and secondary colours as well as fantastic fine motor control practice if children use a dropper or pipette. Once children have made secondary colours they could then experiment by mixing primary and secondary colours to make tertiary colours or try to make as many different shades…
Scribble Bots are a brilliant fun, mini engineering challenge offering lots of scope for investigations. Try changing the size or shape of the container, number of pens, number of batteries, size of propeller, make the propeller off centre or move the pens higher or lower up the container. Can you predict how each change will affect the…
These fun music science experiments for kids are all about making sounds, how we hear sounds, pitch and music! Set up a speaker, a drum, and rice first to see sound in action, then make a drum, rainstick, guitar and lots more easy music science activities. Making and testing musical instruments is a great hands-on…
Mobile launch platforms were used to transport the Saturn V rockets and space shuttles to the launch pad. This activity introduces children to the concept of a mobile launch platform and uses the idea as inspiration for a fun engineering challenge. Challenge Design and build a mobile launch platform for a rocket. The platform should be moveable…
I remember getting my first telescope when I was 9 years old, and then desperately wanting to visit NASA and go to space camp a few years later. There’s just something about space and the stars that is so fascinating. Two of my children are currently learning about space in school, so planets and stars…
In the story of The Princess and the Pea, the princess can’t sleep because she can feel a pea through many layers of mattresses. We used the story to inspire first the building of a wooden bed and then the addition of mattress materials to see which cushioned our pea ( a marble ) most effectively….
