I’m very happy to welcome back Maggy from Red Ted Art today with a guest post about the Science of Music. I love Maggy’s blog because she makes everything so pretty, whereas I only manage functional items. Maggy has made “shooters” and explained roundabouts in previous posts, but today, it’s all about making music! You could…
This mini science activity is great for learning about properties of materials, particularly how waterproof they are. It can be messy but works well as an outdoor or bathtime activity. The idea is to cover small soft toys in different materials to find out which have waterproof properties. Equipment Method Half-fill the container with water….
Building a mini hovercraft is a great way to learn about friction. Hovercrafts are really interesting as they move on top of a layer of air. The layer of air reduces friction allowing the hovercraft to move quickly over land and sea. We’ve been learning about friction recently, which is a complex topic to grasp,…
Today, we’ve been trying to learn about forces. Pushes and pulls are examples of forces. When we push or pull something, it moves. Can you push a toy car softly? What happens? Does it move further if you push harder? Can you think of things you push and things you pull? Are there things you…
This baking soda powered boat is a great mini engineering challenge for kids. It involves lots of scientific thinking and is a fantastic hands-on science activity. Little scientists need to think about how the gas produced by the reaction between the baking soda and vinegar will escape and if this will be powerful enough to…
Following on from our mini magnet maze last week, today we made a spooky ghost. The paper ghost rises up because the metal paperclips are attracted to the magnet. I’ve also got lots more Halloween science ideas for you to try, including witchy potions, pumpkin optical illusions and a spooky density jar. Spooky magnet ghost 1…
Have you ever looked at your fingerprints? How would you expect them to compare to the fingerprints of friends and family? Fingerprints are a unique form of identification as the arrangement of ridges and patterns differs for everyone! You only need an ink pad and paper for this easy fingerprint activity. What you need Instructions…
Do you remember our lolly stick races? They are a great way to explore surface tension, but this activity demonstrating surface tension with toothpicks is even easier! The toothpicks start off in a triangle shape and then fly apart when a little washing-up liquid is added. Surface tension activity with toothpicks You’ll need Instructions Why…
On a rainy day, my children can often be found skidding down our hallway. We have wooden floors, so they are slippy enough to be fun, but not so slippy it’s dangerous. We have found that skidding is a lot more fun when wearing socks, but why is this? The answer is Friction. Friction is…
How do you make a lolly stick race across water? Would you believe me if I told you all you needed was a drop of washing-up liquid ( dish soap ) and some water to do a fun surface tension experiment? Racing lolly sticks – surface tension experiment You’ll need Water A large container –…
